I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 323, of the 5th instant,* from which I have learnt with satisfaction that the Legislative Council of Trinidad has voted the sum of £150 to cover the cost of the adaptation, for use in the West Indies, of the lantern lectures on the United Kingdom, prepared by Mr. H. J. Mackinder for use in the schools of the Eastern Colonies, and of a set of slides.

The assumption in the concluding paragraph of your despatch is correct.

Downing Street, December 29, 1905. WITH reference to my letter of the 9th October last † and to earlier corre- spondence on the subject of the adaptation for use in other parts of the Empire of the lantern lectures on the United Kingdom, I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to enclose, for your information the accompanying copy of a despatch* which has been received from the Governor of Trinidad notifying the appropriation of the sum of £150 to cover the cost of the preparation of a special edition of the lectures for use in the West Indies and of a set of slides.

I am also to enclose a copy of the reply.t

The West Indian edition can now go forward on the lines already arranged.

Q. Set of six photographs showing quay wall construction :—

(1) Quay wall staging for laying blocks with suction dredger in front making

foundation trench.

(2) View showing divers' houses, pile drivers, &c.

(3) Electric gantry in use at blockbuilding yard.

(4) Blockbuilding and stacking gantry, with electric traveller in operation.

(5) Staging with concrete wall brought up to coping level with goliath for

depositing blocks.

(6) Wall finished, reclaiming area at back with sand pumped up by dredgers.
