MINUTES OF MEETING HELD AT THE COLONIAL OFFICE,

4TH APRIL, 1905.

PRESENT:

Mr. Lucas, and

Mr. Hunter, Secretary.

Certain correspondence was reported by Mr. Lucas, who then read Mr. Mackinder's Report as altered by him in consultation with Mr. Lucas.

Mr. Lucas also read parts of a draft despatch to the Eastern Colonies. Mr. Mackinder then explained the appendices to his report.

The question was raised as to, whom the ownership of the copyright should vest in. The point 'to be referred to Mr. Cox (Legal Assistant Under-Secretary, Colonial Office).

It was decided that 250 copies of Mr. Mackinder's book should be printed, and the type kept standing for the present. Mr. Mackinder to see the Crown Agents, and to arrange to select a printer.

It was agreed that print III (basis of a despatch to the British Dominions beyond the Seas) should stand over for the present.

THE object of giving to the school children of the United Kingdom a better knowledge of the Colonies, and of giving to the school children of each Colony a better knowledge of the United Kingdom and of other parts of the Empire has, as you are no doubt aware, been brought into prominence by various organizations and commended itself to Mr. Chamberlain when Secretary of State for the Colonies. It is an object which has my own hearty approval.

• Of all Colonies and Protectorates, except Ceylon, the Straits Settlements, and Hong Kong.
