MY LORD,
No. 186.
(QUEENSLAND.)
LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.
WE were honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Bramston's
Royal Courts of Justice, July 30, 1890. lotter of the 9th instant, stating that with reference to our Report of the 5th of March 1887, and to previous correspondence, in connection with the question of the separation of the northern portion of Queensland, he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us a copy of pamphlet by Mr. W. Coote, and to request that we would inform your Lordship whether anything in that pamphlet disposed us to modify the opinions which had been expressed by the Law Officers in previous reports on the subject.
That a copy of a paper printed for the use of the Colonial Office was transmitted for convenience of reference, in which would be found (at page 140) a copy of your Lordship's despatch to the Governor of Queensland enclosing an account of the proceedings at the deputation which waited upon your Lordship on the 17th of May 1887, referred to by Mr. Coote.
In obedience to your Lordship commands, we have the honour to
Report
That we have considered the arguments contained in the pamphlet of Mr. W. Coote submitted to us.
We see no reason to modify the opinions expressed in the reports of the Law Officers
of the 29th July 1885, 26th June 1886, and the 5th March 1887.
The Right Hon.
Lord Knutsford, G.C.M.G., &c. &c. &c
We have, &c.,
(Signed) RICHARD WEBSTER.
EDWARD CLARKE.
