LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.
We are honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Meade's
Temple, December 2, 1872. letter of the 29th ultimo, stating that he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us a copy of a Despatch from the Administrator of the Government in Chief of the West Afrion Settlements, enclosing a copy of the judgment of the Acting Chief Justice of Sierra Leone in the case of Regina v. Nelson, an alien resident at Sierra Leone, who was tried for an assault committed at a place out of the settlement but within the limits prescribed in the Act 24 & 25 Vict. c. 31., "An Act for the prevention and punishment of offences committed by Her Majesty's subjects within certain terri- "tories adjacent to the Colony of Sierra Leone," and who was acquitted on the ground of his not being one of Her Majesty's subjects.

That the Administrator also enclosed a copy of the Queen's Advocate's report upon the case.
And that he (Mr. Meade) was to request us to favour your Lordship with our opinion as to whether the decision of the Acting Chief Justice was right in law.
