(GENERAL.)

MY LORD,

LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.

Royal Courts of Justice, 30th June 1883. We were honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Bramston's letter of the 21st instant, stating that with reference to our report of the 29th of January last respecting the proposed amendment of the Colonial Attornies Relief Act, within the limits mentioned in the letter from the Colonial Office of the 20th of January, Mr. Bramston was directed by your Lordship to state that since the date of our report, a draft Bill was submitted to your Lordship by Mr. Acton Adams, a gentleman from New Zealand, who brought the matter before the Colonial Office; and it was arranged that Her Majesty's Government would offer no objection to the Bill if introduced by some private member, but your Lordship desired the insertion of certain amendments as shown in red ink upon the accompanying copy of the draft Bill. That Mr. Adama had, however, explained that the amendment in the margin of page 2 of the draft would exclude solicitors admitted in New Zealand, for in that Colony it appears that English solicitors before admission are required to pass some slight examination in the local laws; and he asked that a further amendment might be made in the draft Bill by adding in the margin of page 2 the words “or "examination except in the laws of the Colony or dependency, in so far as they differ from the laws of England," and Mr. Bramston was to request to be informed whether we saw any objection to the Bill with that amendment.

In obedience to your Lordship's commands, we have the honour to

Report

That we do not see any objection to the Bill with the proposed amendment; but we would suggest that it should be submitted to the Incorporated Law Society, for any observations they may have to make upon it in its present shape, before it is finally determined to support it.

The Right Hon. the Earl of Derby,

We have, &c.,

(Signed)

HENRY JAMES. FARRER HERSCHELL.
