SIR,
No. 186.
(AUSTRALIA.)
FOREIGN OFFICE to COLONIAL OEFICE.
On the receipt of your letter of the 15th ultimo the Marquis of Salisbury
Foreign Office, 18th November 1878. referred the whole of the correspondence between this Department and the Colonial Office, on the subject of the French occupation of the Chesterfield Islands. to the Law Officers of the Crown; and I am now to state to you, for the information of Sir M. Hicks Beach, that their opinion is to the effect that there is no circumstance stated in the papers which have been referred to them which would justify Her Majesty's Government in making any representations to the French Government on the subject. I am to add that Lord Salisbury would be glad to learn whether Sir M. Hicks Beach concurs in this view of the matter.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
I have, &c.. (Signed) TENTERDEN.
