SIR,
No. 172.
(NEW ZEALAND.)
LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.
Temple, 29th June 1878.
We were honoured with Mr. Branston's letter of the 21st ult., stating that he was directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to transmit for our consideration a copy of an Act of the New Zealand Legislature, entitled "An Act to set at rest doubts on the law relating to wills and other testamentary instruments affecting personal estate executed by persons without the Colony of New Zealand," which had been reserved by the Governor for the signification of Her Majesty's pleasure thereon.
66
That having regard to the fact that a Colonial Legislature was incompetent to deal with matters occurring beyond the limits of the Colony, Mr. Bramston was to request us to favour you with our opinion whether there was anything in the provisions of that Act to prevent him from submitting it for the assent of Her Majesty in Council.
In compliance with the request contained in Mr. Bramston's letter we have the honour to
Report
That there is nothing in the provisions of the Act referred to as to prevent it being submitted for the assent of Her Majesty in Council.
The Right Hon.
Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Bart.,
&c. &c.

We have, &c., (Signed)
JOHN HOLKER.
