MY LORD,
No. 710.
(DOMINICA.)
LAW OFFICERS to FOREIGN OFFICE.
Temple, May 11, 1871. WE are honoured with your Lordship's commands signified in Mr. Hammond's letter of the 4th instant, stating
1st. That he was directed by your Lordship to-transmit to us a letter from the Colonial Office dated May 2nd, with its enclosure, respecting the alleged murder, by the master and certain of the crew of the American vessel "Montezuma," of Antoine Anthony, a British subject at Portsmouth, Dominica, on the 8th of March last, and requesting to be informed what instructions should be given to the autho- rities in Dominica or other British Islands with a view to procure the punishment of the persons implicated.
2nd. That Mr. Hammond was to request that we would take those papers into our consideration, &c.
In obedience to your Lordship's commands, we have the honour to
Report
That it does not appear that there is much chance of the "Montezuma" coming within British jurisdiction so as to allow of the parties against whom the verdict of the coroner's inquest stands out being taken into custody.
We, therefore, think it desirable that the attention of the American Government should be called to the case, and a request be made to them to cause the accused to be apprehended whenever they come within American jurisdiction with a view to their
extradition.
The Earl Granville, K.G.
&c. &o.
&c.
We have, &c. (Signed)
R. P. COLLIER.
