MY LORD,

No. 116.

(MAURITIUS,)

The LORD CHANCELLOR to COLONIAL OFFICE.

House of Lords, 15th November 1876.

I AM directed by the Lord Chancellor to acknowledge the receipt of your Lord- ship's letter of the 9th instant, inviting him to express his opinion upon the subject of a Despatch from the Governor of Mauritius forwarding for Her Majesty's approval an Ordinance passed by the Legislature of that Colony for the better administration of justice in the Seychelles.

The Lord Chancellor now desires me to inform your Lordship that he does not see any objection to the Ordinance passed for the Seychelles Islands. The evil which has arisen is one which requires to be met by a strong remedy; and, having regard to the circumstances of that Dependency, he does not think that it could be corrected by treating it as a contempt of court, or by any means other than legislation.

The Right Hon. the Earl of Carnarvon,
