MY LORD,
No. 872.
(CANADA.)
LAW OFFICERS to FOREIGN OFFICE.
We are honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Lord Enfield's
Temple, November 10, 1873. letter of the 6th instant, stating that he was directed to transmit to us the accom- panying correspondence respecting the case of Samuel Joy, and to request that we would take these papers into consideration, and favour your Lordship with any observations we might have to offer thereupon.
In obedience to your Lordship's commands we have the honour to
Report
That in our opinion Mr. Hamilton Fish was quite justified in making the remark contained in his letter of the 9th October 1873 to Sir E. Thornton, and that Mr. Joy, having been illegally brought into the province of New Brunswick, should not have been kept in prison there by detainers.
The Earl Granville, K.G.
