Unnumbered. 6th March. Regret to inform you that severe cyclone passed over Mauritius 5th March. Fear widespread damage to buildings and very heavy loss of sugar crops. Cannot yet report whether much loss of life, very high winds still prevail, telephone and telegraph wires cut. Communications by road very difficult. Will report as soon as possible.

(Received 11.55 a.m., 9th March, 1931.) [Answered by 4.]

Immediate. No. 24. 9th March. Preliminary inspection and report show hurricane damage severe, causing widespread distress. Large number of small dwellings demolished and several thousands homeless. So far heaviest damage reported is in Moka and western suburbs of Port Louis. Damage to larger buildings not believed serious except in one or two places but extensive minor damage generally. Moka Hospital badly damaged and will prob- ably have to be evacuated. Temporary relief measures in pro- gress for feeding and sheltering homeless persons in various Gov- ernment and other buildings.
