MY LORD DUKE,

QUEEN'S ADVOCATE to COLONIAL OFFICE.

Doctors' Commons, June 16, 1860.

I AM honoured with your Grace's commands, signified in Sir F. Rogers' letter of 5th June instant, stating that with my letter of the 28th January last* I transmitted to your Grace a draft of Letters Patent for the appointment of a metropolitan of Canada ; that it was then contemplated that the Bishop of Quebec for the time being should be the metropolitan, but it is now decided that that office should be conferred on the Bishop of Montreal and his successors.

Sir F. Rogers was therefore pleased to request that I would make the necessary alteration in the draft Letters Patent for that purpose, and was accordingly pleased to return to me the original draft, together with a copy of the Letters Patent of the Bishop of Montreal to which it will be necessary for me to refer in making such

amendment.

In obedience to your Grace's commands I have taken this matter into consideration and have prepared, and herewith transmit, a fresh draft with the necessary alterations for the purpose of appointing the Bishop of Montreal and his successors metropolitan of Canada.

I return herewith the papere transmitted with Sir F. Rogers' letter, viz., the original draft and the Letters Patent, 13th July 1850, erecting the see of Montreal.

I beg leave again to refer to and adhere to my report of the 28th January 1860 on this subject.

The Right Hon. the Duke of Newcastle,
