7299.
MY LORD Duke,
No. 200.
(SOUTH AUSTRALIA.)
QUEEN'S ADVOCATE to COLONIAL OFFICE.
Doctors' Commons, July 24, 1863.
I AM honoured with your Grace's commands, signified in Sir Frederic Rogers' letter of the 22nd instant, stating that he was directed by your Grace to transmit to me
the copy of an Act of the Legislature of South Australia "To amend the Acts relating No. 4 of "to marriages in the Province of South Australia by extending certain provisions 25 & 26 Viet.
thereof to persons professing with the Society of Friends called Quakers," and that your Grace would be glad to learn whether I see any reason why this Act should not be left in operation.
In obedience to your Grace's commands I have considered this Act and have the honour to
Report
That I cannot advise your Grace that in my opinion this Act ought to be left in operation.
It confers on the Society of Friends a power of celebrating marriages between persons not belonging to their society.
There seems to be no reason why on civil, religious, or political grounds such an extraordinary power should be desired by or granted to this society.
I have, &c.
His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, K.G. (Signed)
&c.
