CORRESPONDENCE RELATIVE TO
Barque "Lord Elgin," River Demerary,
January 31, 1853.
IN answer to your communication of date the 29th current (from the Chinese Board), for the information of the gentlemen composing that Board I beg to send the following answers, viz.
Answer to Query 1.-At Hong Kong 11 péculs, of 133 lbs. each, of stockfish for coolies only; also four peculs for cabin use.
Messrs. Tait and Co.'s list of stores shipped, list of stores at Singapore, at Anjar, und Cape of Good Hope, all herewith enclosed."
Answer to Query 2.-Arrack was issued to the Chinese at all times, on Dr. Shier's order, and in quantities varying from half to a full wineglass per man per day, off the Cape of Good Hope, in cold water daily.
Answer to Query 3.-The distance run may be seen by referring to that book, and the true position by observation by reference to the vessel's track on charts herewith sent.
Answer to Query 4-The log-book contains, I believe, the amount respectively issued for the whole coolies on board, except sago and tea for the sick, which was at Dr. Shier's disposal, and issued as requisite by him. On account of my own illness, I could not give the attention to this and other matters I should have wished.
Answer to Query 5.-Three charts are herewith sent, showing the vessel's outward track to Madras, also homeward track from China.
Answer to Query 1.-Lat. 7° 47' south, 101° 25' east, at 430 p.m., civil time, 24th October 1852, pumped half an hour, and then had 17 inches at the pump. Made about one foot per hour, according as she lay over and immersed her side, and increased the pressure more or less.
Answer to Query 2-The extent to which the rice has been damaged is yet unascer- tained, but none of damaged rice was issued to Chinese passengers.
Answer to Query 3.-The original log has been already sent.
