This route is considered best for the following reasons:—
1st. A considerable part of the trade of the Cape Colonies and Mauritius is with
India and the far East.
2nd. There is a growing traffic likely to be remunerative with Zanzibar and the
East.
3rd. The tariff would be considerably less by this route to Europe, and not half so
much to India and the East.
4th. From Aden there is a duplicate system to Europe and the East.
5th. The whole system can be more easily maintained.
6th. The cable would touch points more likely to become remunerative than those
on the West Coast.
7th. The cables on the West Coast, lying as they would in the line of a continuous trade wind, could only be repaired with the greatest difficulty, but more likely they could not be repaired at all.

This route is connected by a single line of cable to Madeira and Lisbon, 1,824 miles, and does not give communication with Mauritius.
It would not develop any traffic, except that of the Cape of Good Hope; it would be almost impossible to repair, lying as it would within the trade winds nearly the whole of its length.

This route, like No. 3, is also connected by a single line of cable to Madeira and Lisbon, 1,824 miles, and does not give communication with the Mauritius.
It would be very expensive to maintain, and the traffic would probably not pay the expenses of the stations.
For the of communicating with Ascension and St. Helena as naval stations
purpose should it be desired, a line from Cape Coast Castle to those islands would be 2,046 miles, or they could be connected with Pernambuco by a cable 2,136 miles in length, but these lines have obviously no commercial value.
No. 5.
Johanna offers no facilities for trade, and is only a central point for connecting the Mauritius and Zanzibar. The saving of cable by this route is so unimportant that we think the direct route to Zanzibar, No. 1, should be preferred.
