Mr. Blake, M.P.-My Lord, I have the honour to introduce to your Lordship the deputation present on behalf of the Anti-Slavery Society, who will represent to your Lordship the views entertained by the coloured population of Jamaica in respect to Coolie labour. As these gentlemen are fully acquainted with the subject, and there is a Memorial to be presented, I will not take up any more of your Lordship's time, but will submit the names of the several speakers.
Lord Carnarvon.-I may just mention before we begin business that I shall be very glad, whilst I do not desire to curtail any remarks that may be made, if we can do our business as expeditiously as possible, I having to attend the House of Lords shortly, besides having one or two other engagements this afternoon. I would not hurry you, but time this evening is of some value to me.
The Rev. Mr. Busacott.-Will your Lordship take the Petition we have to present as read ?
Lord Carnarvon. I have read it myself, and think that that course would be convenient.

Mr. Edmund Sturge.-My Lord, I will endeavour to be as brief as possible. Your Lordship will observe that, in the Memorial which has been presented, and which you have read, we have dwelt upon the Jamaica Island as being rather a peculiar and special case, and one that stands out, in some of its features, on altogether different grounds from the immigration-on which we have had occasion at different times to
