Lieutenant Hire had been formerly a very active and intelligent First Lieutenant of a frigate. During the recent ill-conduct of some of the other officers towards Lieutenant Fayrer, Mr. Hire cordially supported him in carrying out the regulations. His age is about fifty-three, and he is quite capable of taking charge of any prison. He informs me that he has been passed over in naval promotions, from being employed in the

convict establishment.

It appears to me that there would be an advantage on public grounds, could the overseers of convicts, in such stations as Bermuda, contemplate a time when they might return home to some more agreeable employment than that of the convict hulks

For this reason, as well as for Lieutenant Hire's own claims, I venture to propose that his application be recorded, and if convenient to the public service be acceded to.
