a In this and the following year, Lord Palmerston proposed to reduce the army 5,000 men, by
suspending recruiting; but the proportion per regiment was not defined.
6 In 1830 it was decided that the reduction should extend to 6,640 men in the infantry, being 80
in each battalion at home and in the Colonies. A regiment at home consisted of 659 Rank and File,
and a regiment in the Colonies had 479 abroad and 180 at home.
In 1831 the army was recruited to its full establishment; each regiment 739 Rank and File,,
Those divided were in Colonies 515, at home 224.
