The light is situated on the islet off Flagstaff Point, which is about one mile to E.S.E. of Wei-hai-wei City. It is elevated 52 feet above the level of the sea, and in clear weather the white light should be visible 10 miles, and the red 5 miles.

The light is exhibited from an iron column 12 feet high, and the column and dwelling are white.

Chao Pei Tsui light has been re-established and shows as formerly.

II. Shoal and Rock.

A shoal, awash at low water, extends quarter of a cable north and south, with south-east point extreme of Itau bearing N. 50° 40′ W. distant 2 cables.

Also a pinnacle rock, with 18 feet of water at low water off the north-west point of Liu Kung Tau, situated with Observatory Island bearing S. 54° 30′ W., 8 cables and 81 yards from the shore.

This is the rock referred to in Notice to Mariners No. 401, of 1898.

III.-Buoyage.

A large conical red buoy has been placed on the west side of the channel in 5 fathoms, 3 cables west, from west extreme of Observatory Island.

Small cask buoys mark the edge of the pocket of the anchorage under Liu Kung Tau, and are placed in 5 fathoms, low water. Red on the starboard hard, and black on the port hand coming in.

To the Rear-Admiral, the Commodore, and the respective Captains, Commanders, and Officers Commanding Her Majesty's Ships and Vessels employed on the China Station.

SIR,

Custom House, Chifu, March 30, 1899. In reply to Your Excellency's letter dated the 6th instant, enquiring whether the Chinese Customs would provide and maintain a fourth order light at Flagstaff Point, Wei-hai-wei, at the expense of the British Admiralty, I am directed by the Inspector- General to inform you that the Customs will put up and maintain the light asked for, the cost to be repaid by the Admiralty, and that the work will be proceeded with with as little delay as possible.

now under construction.

In reply to your despatch, No. 1699, dated 8th August, enquiring as to the estimated cost of providing and maintaining a fourth order light at Flagstaff Point, Wei-hai-wei, I beg to inform you that the cost of the light is estimated by the Engineer- in-Chief at Hk. Tis. 8,000 (say £1,200), and its annual maintenance at Hk. Tls. 1980 (say £297)—£1 reckoned as H. Tls. 6.6.

I enclose a copy of his detailed estimate of the cost of installation, and subjoin a table giving the items of ordinary expenditure which should suffice for its annual main-

tenance.

Admiralty, January 25, 1899.

WITH reference to your letter of the 9th October last, No. 542/455, and to Admiralty letter in reply of 27th ultimo, M. 14091, I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to inform you that they conour in your opinion that the fight at Flagstaff Point, Wei-hai-wei, should be of the fourth order.

My Lords desire that you will enquire of the Chinese Customs, whether they would be prepared to provide the improved light and maintain it, on repayment by the Ad- miralty, as this course appears to their Lordships preferable to the light being supplied by this Department.
