STRAITS SETTLEMENTS.

War Office, London, S. W., 24th June, 1907.

I AM commanded by the Army Council to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, 19775, of 11th instant, with further reference to the request of the Governor of the Straits Settlements for information as to certain items of military expenditure specified in a statement included in the Annual Blue Book of the Colony.

The Governor asks to be informed as to "expenditure not ascertainable locally," in the calendar years 1905 and 1906, under the headings -Transport of Troops from England, Capitation Rate for Indian Native Infantry, and Freight on Stores received from England. Your letter of 11th instant suggests that the information should be given for the last two financial years.

The Army Council are anxious to assist Sir J. Anderson in his purpose of exhibiting to the public of the Straits Settlements the annual military expenditure

$600,000 of this sum was borrowed from the Federated Malay States at 4 per cent. interest. ↑ No. 110.
