Reports that his attention has been called to the fact that the whole of the Depreciation Fund of the Currency Commissioners is invested in Consols, and recommends that the same discre- tion be given to the Crown Agents in regard to the investment of this Fund sa is allowed them in regard to the other investments of the Currency Commissioners.

Remarks on the tendency towards a diminution in the metallic circulation and towards an increase in the note circulation; proposes to demonetize the old dollar as soon as the new dollars are all received.

States that a further telegram has been received from the Government of the Straits Settlements reporting the sale of £89,598 48. 4d. on account of Currency Commissioners; states how it is proposed to meet the payment, and suggests that the money necessary to meet the emergency which has arisen should be provided from Loan Funds.

Transmits copy of No. 227, and states that the Secretary of State entirely agrees with the view expressed there- in that it is desirable to keep in Consols a substantial portion of the funds invested on behalf of the Com- missioners.
