BRUNEI AND THE LIMBANG.

The part of Borneo which is under British protection consists of—
(a) British North Borneo (or Sabah), governed
by a Chartered Company.
(6) Sarawak,ruled by Sir C. Brooke, commonly
known as "Rajah Brooke."
(0) Labuan, a Crown Colony, administered
by the Chartered Company.
(d) The small remnant of the Sultanate of Brunei, which so late as the middle of the 19th century extended over the greater part of the north of Borneo,
The British North Borneo Company was first formed in 1881 to take over certain concessions, which had first been obtained from the Sultan of Brunei by American Trading Company in 1877, and had subsequently passed into the hands of Baron Overbeck and Messrs. Dent, who noquired also the rights claimed by the Sultan of Sulu in the north-east of Borneo. The Company was granted a Charter in 1882. Since that date its territories have spread south and west as a result of concessions made at various times by the Sultan of Brunei, and now cover about 30,000 square miles.
In 1888 an agreement was signed placing the Company's dominions under British protection,
The State of Sarawak at the west corner of
North Borneo was founded in 1841 by Sir James Brooke, the uncle of the present Rajah, who succeeded him in 1868. Sir James Brooke obtained a grant of the small district of that name from the Sultan of Brunei during a time of disturbance, together with the title of Rajsh.
