GOVERNMENT VETERINARY SURGEON,
CEYLON.
ONE of the principal duties of the Veterinary Surgeon will be to assist the Government in the suppression of epidemic diseases among cattle, and to advise as to the improvement and management of native stook. His services will also be utilised in the inspection of horses and cattle licensed for drawing vehicles on hire. He will be attached as a teacher to the staff of the Colombo Agricultural School, at which it is proposed to institute a course of lectures and a practical class as a nucleus of a Veterinary Department.
▲ salary of 5,000 rupees is offered to begin with, the engagement to be for three years in the first instance. The rupee is valued by the Ceylon Government for the purpose of paying a public servant his salary or half salary while on leave at 18. 10 d. to the rupee, but the market rate of exchange is much lower, and constantly varies. It is quoted from day to day in the money articles of the principal newspapers. If public servants wish to remit part of their salaries to this country, they must do so at the market rate.
Private practice will be allowed to such an extent and so long as in the judgment of the Governor it does not interfere with official duties. He would probably make a fair income by private practice, but it is not possible to make any exact statement, nor can the Government in any way guarantee what this private practice would be. The officer will be expected to be able to leave for Ceylon soms time in February.
Necessary instrumente would be provided by the Government, and provision would be made for travelling expenses when the Veterinary Surgeon has to travel on Government duty.
