That the principle, lately introduced in the Dependency of Seychelles, on which the ecclesiastical grant annually voted for the use of the Christian churches is to be apportioned to those churches according to the number of their adherents, be laid down likewise for this Colony, and gradually carried into practice, provided that all rights vested in the present titulars be reserved.

8. The Hon. Dr. O. Beaugeard laid on the table the following memorial, having for its object a more equitable distribution of the ecclesiastical grants :-

MY LORD,

Bishopthorpe, Mauritius, July 9, 1889. In the course of this morning's meeting of the Legislative Council, I am informed, that, at the request of his Excellency the Governor, a proposition which was to have been made by the Hon. 2. In view of the very peculiar and important circumstances of this case, I have the honour to request your Lordship to be so good as to suspend your judgment thereon until I shall have been able to lay the position of the Church of England before your Lordship, as I hope to do by the next mail.

To the Right Hon. Lord Knutsford,
