Enclosure in No. 70.
SIGNATURES TO THE PETITION TO THE QUEEN.
AFTER careful examination of the different pages we have to report as follows: We find the total number of alleged signatures to be 4,513, and the accompanying tabular statement will show the professions and employments of the subscribers.
The above number does not include the eight signatures on the memorial itself sent home by last mail, consisting of the Mayor of Port Louis, the Honorables Sir V. Naz, K.C.M.G., H. Adam, H. Léclézio, and V. Geffroy, elected members, and the Honorables G. Guibert, A. W. Edwards, Arlanda, nominee members of Council.
It is to be noted that Mr. G. V. K-Vern had also signed on page 146.
We would call attention to the number of signatures of Chinese, of Indians, and of small creole proprietors.
It is doubtful how far these parties could form an intelligent opinion as to the subject- matter of the petition, and it will be observed that there is a large number of signatures of employés, whom it may be presumed were, more or less, under dependence; on this point we would refer to the first page of the signatures, where the Honorable H. Portal, the proprietor of "St. Hubert," signs first, and 17 of his employés sign upon the same page. It is also to be noted that a number of signatures of Indians and Chinese appear to have been written by the same hand, and this remark would apply to many creole signatures.
Five Government servants have sigued the petition-two doctors, holding temporary employment, the engineer of the Board of Health, a clerk of the Treasury, and a forest ranger.
With respect to the number of electors who have signed, the figure we arrived at does not agree with that set forth in the covering letter to the petition. After verifying whether those marked as electors are borne on the official list, published in Government Gazette, No. 1, of 6th January 1886, and adding to this number those whom we found to be registered as electors, though not marked as such, we ascertained the correct number to
be 984.
There were three or four names to which the word elector was added, but we could not make out the signatures, and therefore we are unable to say whether they are electors or not.
February 9, 1887.

THO. ELLIOTT,
Acting Receiver General. J. H. ACKROYD,
Assistant Colonial Secretary.

NOTES.
Page 52 of Address.-On looking at Guillemin Pierre Maurice (Grand Port), Numa Louis (Pl. Wilhems), Reij Henri (Plaines Wilhems), it seems as if these names are
in the same handwriting, and that they are not genuine signatures, inasmuch
as the family names are written before the Christian names.
