Enclosure 3 in No. 1.
W. T. PEARCE,
General Manager.
Ceylon Government Railway,
General Manager's Office, Colombo, May 22, 1885.
In further reply to your letter, No. 257, of the 11th instant, I have the honour to enclose the financial results of the working of the extension line from Nawalapitiya to Hatton and Talawakele, from the date of the opening to Hatton, 4th June to the end of the year 1884, and also for the first three months of this year.
As mentioned in my Administration Report for 1884, the profit on the seven months working was Rs. 28,029 30, which, on the capital expenditure of Rs. 10,066,295, gave a profit of 0.3 per cent.
"In the same way the profit for the first three months of this year is Rs. 41,719, which, on the capital expenditure of Rs. 10,270,907, gives a profit of Ō ́4 per cent.
If, however, depreciation of stock be computed at Rs. 40,000 a year, and interest and sinking fund at Rs. 600,000 a year, a considerable loss is shown, but as I am not aware what proportion of this Rs. 600,000 per annum would really have to be paid from the profits of the railway extension working, I would beg to ask that this question be referred to the Auditor-General.
am, &c.
(Signed)
The Hon. the Colonial Secretary.
