"Thalia," February 17, 1874. WE have to inform our friend, that we have received our friend's letter, informing us that he has handed over to Captain Grant, of Her Majesty's ship "Midge," 286 slabs of tin, equal to 150 piculs and 1 catty. We are glad that our friend has seen the justice

of making this compensation; and we will not forget to inform the Governor of our friend's decision in this matter,

There is yet one point in our friend's letter which gives us some thought. We are well informed that Raja Mahdi and Raja Mahmood, and several other evil persons, are still in our friend's Dominion at Langat; and we strongly advise our friend, if he wishes to keep the friendship of the British Government, to drive them out of his country.

We believe in our friend's integrity and good faith; and the best proof that our friend can give of his good intentions is to rid his country of those evil persons, who are only remaining in it to ferment troubles for future disturbances, the responsibility of which will be on our friend.

We also inform our friend, that we are to-day going with our friend's son, Tunku Dia Oodin, to a village called Toomboh, in our friend's territory, which, we hear, is also piratical, and then to visit Lookoot, and other places, also in our friend's territory; after this, Tunku Dia Oodin will return to Klang.

I HAVE the honour to inclose, for your Excellency's information, a copy of a despatch which I have received (per Her Majesty's ship "Rinaldo ") from Captain' Wool- combe, of Her Majesty's ship "Thalia," Senior Officer of the squadron detached off the Jugra River for the purpose of affording support to His Highness Tuanku Dia Udin and the Commissioners appointed to assist him in the trial and punishment of certain persons charged with piracy and murder,

"Thalia," off Langkat River, February 16, 1874. SINCE your departure on the 12th instant, I have to report that the members who were to form the Court (together with the witnesses) for the trial of those prisoners charged with piracy and murder arrived on the same day; and on Friday the 13th the trial was commenced, and brought to a conclusion yesterday evening (15th).

2. With the exception of a boy of between 13 and 14 years of age, all the prisoners

were found guilty of the charges preferred against them, and their execution took place at 10 o'clock this morning.

3. The stockades were destroyed to-day; at the request of His Highness the Tuanku

Dia Udin a party of our men assisted.

4. I have sent orders to Commander Grant to join me at once.

5. I hope to leave this at daylight to-morrow for the purpose of visiting Toombolo,

said to be a piratical stronghold, and also Lukutt. From the last named place the

6. I hope to reach Singapore on Friday next, the 20th Instant.

7. Commander Parsons, of Her Majesty's ship " Rinaldo," will be able to give any

further information which you may require.
