Inclosure in No. 1.

Extract from a Letter from Vice-Admiral Shadwell, dated November 21, 1872. Commander Denison, senior officer on the Straits division, has recently afforded the Governor of the Straits Settlements the moral support of his presence in the "Zebra," off the Langkat River, and furnished his Excellency with a guard of blue jackets, in con junction with a party of the 80th Regiment, on the occasion of his interview with the Sultan and Chiefs of the surrounding districts, with the object of settling the disturbances at Salangore. The "Zebra" returned to Singapore on the 3rd instant.

Sir,

No. 2.

Admiralty to Colonial Office.

Admiralty, April 3, 1872. WITH reference to your letter of the 7th February last, relative to the tin handed over by the Sultan of Salangore to the Colonial Secretary, to be distributed amongst the crew of Her Majesty's ship "Rinaldo," I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to request you will state to Lord Kimberley that as it appears that this tin had been the property of the pirate Rajah Mahdie, it may be considered, together with 120 kegs of gunpowder taken at the destruction of the forts of Salangore, and sold, as the legitimate property of the captors.

2. Before giving instructions to the Commander-in-chief in Chins to authorize the receipt by the officers and crew of the “Rinaldo” of the portion of the proceeds to which they would be entitled, my Lords would be glad to learn if Lord Kimberley concurs in their view of the subject.

I am, &c. (Signed) VERNON LUSHINGTON,
