the people the general measures of Government, and especially the road ordinance: "I would beg to invite your Lordship's particular attention to this report, which, like everything that proceeds from Mr. Wodehouse, is full of valuable information.”
But in a despatch written on May 6, 1848, during the alleged interval of estrangement, the ordinance which had then passed is spoken of as having been brought forward by "a member of Coun- cil" and as passed after many improvements and suggestions from the Government Agents and other public functionaries to whom it was referred.
One other circumstance with regard to Mr. Wode- house's production of Lord Torrington's letters remains to be noticed. Between the 27th May, when allusion was first made to these letters, and the 30th May, when they were read, Mr. Wode- house had shown them to the Chairman of the Committee, who was understood by Mr. Wode. house to be of opinion that the Committee would not insist upon their production, and also to some most intimate friends, and to one other person, probably public man, for Mr. Wodehouse stated, "in the course of these transactions I have been acting under advice, for which I am very grateful, from a very high quarter and a very honourable quarter. For that advice I never can be sufficiently grateful; but of it I have no intention of speaking further.”
The extracts tendered by Mr. Wodehouse were sufficient for his avowed purpose, and they seem not only relevant to the point for which they were ten- dered, but conclusive of it.
Whether under all these circumstances Mr. Wodehouse was justified in the production of Lord Torrington's letters is the second question in this
paper.
