You will by now have seen Peking

telegrams Nos. 335 and 346 of April 17th and

19th respectively repeated as my telegram

No.558 and 566.

2. We appreciate your difficulties and share

your anxiety to get these soldiers and

dependents shipped out of the Colony as soon

as possible.

We are strongly in favour of trying to

send all (repeat all) who are clearly

identifiable as soldiers or ex-soldiers to

North China or any other mainland port which

the Chinese Government might select and with

this in view are making an approach to the

Chinese Government through H. M. C. A. at Peking

as suggested in Peking telegram No. 335.

4. If the Chinese Government refuse to take

the soldiers, then Formosa seems to be the

only alternative for those who are willing to

go there, but we are against the shipment of

any persons clearly identifiable as soldiers
