THROUGH RAIL TRAFFIC
RESUMPTION?
Reports of a resumption of through rail traffic between Hong Kong and Canton were revived to- day with the announcement of the departure of Mr. I. B. Trevor, general manager, British section of the Kowloon Canton Railway, for the Kwangtun capital. It is the third time this year Mr. Trevor has left for Canton. In preceding attempts negotiations fell through, it is re- ported, because of excessive Chinese demands for their share of the revenue on the British side line.
Mr. Trevor's departure coincided with a Shanghai Press report that Chinese Communist authorities were planning to utilise K.C.R. help to reduce the backlog of export goods to China held up at Hong Kong due to shipping difficulties.
The report said that to discuss the problem the authorities concerned there are calling a conference soon. Among the subjects on the agenda are these:
Freight charges for the British section.
Railway wagons and through freight charges.
Priority for transportation goods, Estimate of quantity goods stored in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, the British section dis- closed a profit of more than 3.5 million Hong Kong dollars during the six- month period April-September this year, representing a 71 per cent. in- crease over the corresponding period of last year.
The railway's monthly report also revealed an increase in goods and pas- sengers carried; and in October alone the line carried the record volume of 38,142 tons of goods, giving a peak revenue of 275,772 dollars.
