26th May 1948.
Many thanks for your letter 96834/1$/48 of 13th Kay 1948 about long distance broadcasting from Hong Kong.
a
May I suggest the following alterations and additions to the draft despatch to the Governor of Hong Kong, copy of which you were good enough to enclose:
(a) Faragraph 2: could the words "intended for reception" be
deleted and "which might be received" be substituted for them?
(b) Sub-paragraph (b) of paragraph 2: could the words
"British Far Eastern Broadcasting Service in Malaya" be deleted, and the following put in its place: "forthcoming establishment by the B.B.C. of a high-powered broadcasting station in Malaya (joined to London by a telecommunications link) to be known as the Voice of Britain station'."?
(c) Could the following sentence be added to the end of.
sub-paragraph (b) of paragraph 2? "For your information only, it is hoped that the B.B.C. will also be able to use Radio SEAC (a powerful shortwave station situated in Ceylon) for similar broadcasts until such time as the Voice of Britain station can be in operation."
I think that the first alteration will make the Foreign Office view plain. I should like the other alteration and the addition to be made because it would show the Governor of Hong Kong the scale on which it is hoped to operate. To refer to the British Far Eastern Broadcasting Service in Malaya alone would give a misleading impression because he will know that that installation is singularly ineffective!
