Parliamentary Question.

Not clear whether this question refers to Hong Kong's medium weve or short wave transmitter, Short wave transmitter is 2 kilowatts and admittedly cannot compete effectively with powerful short wave transmitters on the West Coast of America and else- where. If the question refers to this transmitter, reference to new territories is not understood as it is not intended to provide reception over such a short distance, Regarding suggestion that a more powerful short wave transmitter be installed here, please see my immediately following telegram,

can

Hong Kong medium wɛve transmitter is only 2 kilowatts and could not be expected to reach Cant on except at night, Curiously enough, Canton medium wave transmitter believed less than 2 kilowatts, be heard in Hong Kong throughout the day and no explanation has yet been found. It is known that Hong Kong medium wave transmitter has certain blind spots in new territories. These are inevitable in hill terrain and are not important. Nothing less then a 100 kilowatt transmitter would guarantee reception in Canton and cost of this would be pro- hibitive.
