Commercial Programmes

Father Fyan referred to a letter which he had sent to the Chairman, asking for reconsideration of commercial programmes from Radio Hong Kong, in view of the fact that Malaya were also considering commercials. The Chairman said that, some months ago, he had forwarded a recommendation to Government that commercial programmes be allowed during the period that Radio Hong Kong was at present off the air. Father Ryan con- sidered that with Radio Km operating on 10 kilowatts, Radio Hong Kong should take immediate action if it was to get any commercial sponsors, and the Chairman agreed to raise the matter urgently again with the Government.

Increased Transmitter Power

Father Ryan asked if there was any possibility of an increase in the power of Radio Hong Kong's transmitters. The Chairman replied that he did not see any possibility of this increase in the near future. Father Ryan asked if the question could not be reconsidered in view of the transfer of the broadcasting studios to Electra House. Father Ryan considered that possibly, the profits from a commercial programme could be used to buy a more powerful transmitter. The Chairman also agreed to put this suggestion forward to Government.

Senior Programme Assistant

Father Ryan asked what was the position of the Senior Programme Assistant in relatiɔn to Miss Woods and Mrs. Brown. The Chairman explained that Mr. Shophord was engaged on a half- time temporary basis, and that his duties did not in any way overlap with those of the Music Secretary and Programme Assistant.
