LIBELLOUS VERSION OF AMETHYST INCIDENT

HONGKONG, AUG. S The Hongkong Government to-day officially warned the local office of the Chinese Com- munist New China News Agency that it con- sidered two dispatches on the Amethyst inci- dent which the agency distributed in the colony in its daily news service as being libellous, seditious, and overstepping the limits of public security. It told the director of the agency that in the event of any further infringement appro- priate steps would be taken against the organi-
zation.
The first report, from Nanking, gave the Communist version of the incident in which the Amethyst was charged with sinking a passenger vessel with heavy loss of life. The other, from Peking, said, among other things, that the incident" profoundly taught the Chinese people the viciousness of hypocrisy," and described the British Foreign Office state- ment as a typically hypocritical document.”

These New China News Agency reports were the only reports on the incident published by the colony's three left-wing daily newspapers- one out-and-out Communist and two fellow- travelling-representing about a quarter of the total Chinese daily newspaper circulation.
