REGISTRATION IN HONG KONG

Sir Denis BOYD said that the security of Hong Kong depended on solving the refugee problem, which was in turn dependent for a satisfactory solution on registration. He suggested that the Committee should urge the Governor of Hong Kong to give further consideration to registration in the Colony in view of its striking success in Malaya.

Sir Neil RITCHIE said that there was no doubt that the military problem would he eased if the people of Hong Kong were registered, and that he did not helieve it would prove more difficult than it had been in the Federation.

The COMMITTEE:

instructed the Secretariat to prepare a draft

letter to the Governor of Hong Kong on the advisability of registration, and enclosing information regarding registration in Singapore;

instructed the Secretariat to draft an accompanying letter to the Governor of Hong Kong saying that the Committee had no wish to embarrass him, and asking him to take whatever action on the letter ne saw fit;

instructed the Secretariat to circulate the drafts for approval before despatch.
