The crossing of the Yangtse, accompanied
by a greatly increased number of arrivals of refugees from Shanghai, was reflexted in a rise in the price of rice on the open market in Hong Kong, which has however since declined. Frices of meat, eggs and vegetables are nevertheless showing a distinct tendency to increase and this may be expected to continue as conditions in Kwangtung itself worsen.
