Then there seems to have been some question about a bill of $30. What was that all about A bill was sent in for 100 coolies, and they had used a smaller

number, is that it ?

A.

Mr Shelton Hooper:-

That question about coolies would be about 7 days preceding the Chinese New Year. My foreman asked me if the District could be worked the same as last year. I

asked him how it was done last year, and he replied by Baying "we let the contractor's coolies work overtime". I said that I wanted to see the coolies, or else thera would be no coolies employed, and this sub contractor went to Inspector Fisher and said this $30 had to be paid. Through my interpreter he asked me one morning "what about this $30". Inspector Fisher sent in a report to Dr Atkinson, and we both went up together with the Chinese and Indian foremen, and the man who

I dont know his was supposed to employ the coolies,

- and Dr name,

Sham Iu or something of that sort Atkinson heard the case over, and he said I was right and that the Senior Inspector was wrong, and that he considered it a downright case of squeeze. I then said I should like those papers to go before the Commission, Sir. The man did not have the coolies there for the $30, and I believe they do that every year, and they

say afterwards that they have extra coolies there.

Did you say to Dr Atkinson that you would like the papers to go before the Commission ?
