In conversation with me he appeared satisfied that Hong Kong was doing what it could to co-operate in suppressing smuggling. He also promised to help in the matter of Gap Rock Lighthouse (Gap Rock is a Chinese island some 30 miles from Hong Kong), which was operated by the Hong Kong Government until 1941, and is of great use to shipping, as well as being important for typhoon warnings. The Chinese Government have adopted a somewhat nationalist dog-in-the-manger attitude over an offer by the Hong Kong Government to re-establish and maintain the lighthouse.

Monsignor Fulton Sheen, accompanying Cardinal Spellman of New York, who arrived in Hong Kong on May 27th, gave a broadcast talk to the Chinese people over the Hong Kong Broadcasting Station. Much of his talk consisted of a strong denunciation, in general terms, of Communism. This has been warmly received in the pro-K.M.T. press, but Monsignor Sheen's abuse of the privilege accorded to him has been widely criticized both by Europeans and Chinese.
