An event in the newspaper world of Hong Kong has been the appearance on September 9th of a new liberal and independent paper the "Wen Wei Pao". This paper was closed down in Shanghai in 1947 for its outspoken criticisms of the Nanking Government. It had one of the largest circulations of any papor in Shanghai, and a reputation for objectivity and moral courage. Initially it looks like being fairly successful in Hong Kong. It has already been criticised by K.M.T. circles as having connections with Marshal Li Chai-sum and as supporting the Communists, but the editor and owner have assured us that they wish to remain independent of all parties, although in practice they are likely to have more connections with the "left".
