The Kuomintang have been fairly quiet. On May 20th, the day of the inauguration of Chiang Kai-shek as President of China, they attempted to organise larger processions than those which had been authorised, but they were prevented by the prompt action of the Police. Fortunately, no incident occurred, and the Kuomintang have not attempted to make any capital out of the affair, over which in fact they lost a good deal of "face". It was necessary during the month for the Government to take action against the "Overseas Chinese Educational Association", a K.M.T.- controlled body, which was attempting to usurp the functions of the Director of Education. The Kuomintang for their part have tried to justify their attitude on the grounds that Communist influence in education must be checked.
