In reply to a Note from His oritunnic jeaty's Ambassador No. 26 of the 20th January demanding compensation for the destruction of Kia jajcoty's Consulate-eneral and various other British properties at Cantou by anti-British demonstratore où the 16th January, His Excellency the sinister for Foreign Affairs was no kind as to abbure 3ir Halph Stevenson by his Note No. ou 37/2016 of the 26th 1anuary that on the completion of an official enquiry into the matter the Chinese Governmcat would seek a reasonable settlement in accordance with the principles of international law.

overnment to take the matter fu:tner in the case desired by this Embassy.
It is essential in the opinion of this cabassy that in the interest of amicable relations this Zibasay should be in a position as soon as possible to assure his Zajeaty's 7overnment that all losses both official und personal will be made good in full and without delay und thur enable the persons and organisations done-ided to “roceed with their more detailed statesoute of los8. An early reply to this memorandum giving the material for such an assurance would accordingly be apreciated.
