In the circumstances therefore I am instructed to press for the payment of compensation by the chinese Government of £300,000, (three hundred thousand pounds). In so doing I am to explain that this figure is arrived at by a preliminary review of the various claime submitted in connexion both with damage done to British property and in respect of the loss of personal belong- ings sustained by British subjects. Documentary evidence in support of claims will of course be furnished on request of the Chinese Government. I am to explain that a final and More complete examination might show the compensation figure suggested to be somewhat in exc688 of £300,000. In the circumstances the Chinese government may care to take this opportunity to settle forthwith for this sum and so close this unfortunate case.
