I am etc. to refer to the lans before the Nimeator of Defence correspondence, beginning with the letter
from this Department of the 30th April,
1934 on the subject of the exercise of
Chinese jurisdiction in Kowloon City, and
to transmit, for case of referenee, a
brief historical note on this subject

In 1934 the (to 1) Lords Commissioners
of the Admiralty
and the war office
Couneil (do 27 Army Gounes]
to 3) other service
Departments.
(expressed the view that the exercise
of Chinese jurisdiction in Kowloon City
would be inconsistent with the military
requirements for the defence of Hong Kong
and later, in 1937, in the course of
negotiations with the Chinese Government,
this view was in fact conveyed orally to
the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs
by His Majesty's Ambassador in Nanking.
3.
The Chinese claim to jurisdiction
in Kowloon City has again been
ventilated following recent incidents
