Since above was drafted Nanking telegram 17 has come 10. Answers to 3 points raised by Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs are:**

(a) This assurance can be given. See my telegram No.9 which shows that squattera were given adequate notice and repeated warnings and told where alternative sites could be found. This offer 18 still open. Further, it was open

to them to take away building material after huts were dismantled. After today's operation material has been removed away from site but they are being given facilities to claim it back within seven daya as an act of grace.

(b) This case is still under investigation, but if a mistake was made I would be prepared to opgelder ex gratia payment. I will telegraph further as soon as the facts are clear.

(c) when hearing was resumed today, defendante were represented by a Solicitor who requested adjournment for a week to give him time to study the Treaty. Adjournmeot was finally granted by the Magistrate for 24 hours. appreciate that release is out of the question.
