Addressed to Foreign Office telegram No. 53 January 16th repeated Hong Kong.

News just received that His Majesty's Consulate General at Canton and premises of Butterfield and Swire looted and burned by demonstrators. Two members of staff of British firm of Deacons, viz Wood and Parkhouse, reported injured. Foregoing message received in rather corrupt state from Consul (Information) at Canton through United States Navy. No report yet received from His Majesty's Consul General.

2. I have made protest to Minister for Foreign Affairs and requested that adequate measures to protect British life and property be immediately taken throughout the country my immediately following telegram).
