and property throughout the country The Chinese Government issued an official statement on January 17th regretting the unfortunate incidents in Canton and stating that all necessary instructions had been issued to the protection of British life and property, and the punishment of the rioters.
7. On January 17th His Majesty's Consula te-General, Shanghai was the object of a demonstration by a crowd of some 10,000 mostly students. From the slogans carried this demonstration appears to have been as much anti-Western Powers as anti-British. Local police precautions sufficed to prevent trouble.
