CHINA.

The present anti-British egitation in China has arisen out of the eviction of Chinese squatters from Crown lands in the New Territory of Hong Kong, the background to which is briefly as follows:-

Under the Peking Convention of 1898 the Chinese Government leased the New Territory adjacent to the island of Hong Kong for a period of 99 years. The small walled village known as Kowloon City in the New Territory was included in the lease but it was stipulated that the Chinese officials stationed there should continue to exercise jurisdiction within the village except in so far as this might be inconsistent with military requirements for the defence of Hong Kong.
