With reference to (a) (i) of Savingram in this
His
series covering the period ended 2nd September, 1946, Mr. Sham Wai Yau of the Wa Kiu Chinese newspaper is believed to have left the Colony secretly for an unknown destination before he could be called upon to make his defence to the application for his surrender as a collaborator. This may prove to be an unwise move on his part, since if apprehended elsewhere he may not have the same opportunities to put forward his defence as he would have here. opponents are pressing demands for the formation of a new company to hire the paper for six years with 51% of the capital held by Kuomintang interests. It was said that a settlement on these lines would ensure the withdrawal of the demand for the surrender of Mr. Sham Wai Yau. After long negotiations through an intermediary the present Board of Directors refused to agree to this proposal; the Kuomintang then proposed as an alternative that they should be allowed to hold 25% of the shares and appoint a Managing Director who would have complete power over the Board. There the mat- ter rests at present. The Kuomintang of course already virtually controls the editorial side of this paper.
