A stronger grating. The ordinary Chinese contractor,

when he puts in a grating, he will just out a little

way off the cement, and he will put it in, and here

(indicating with his hands) are joining the two should-

ars of it, and the grating fits on to that. So that it'

will go right down to the bottom of the channel and

sink an inch from the bottom of the channel. The people

throw stuff down, and it catches between the bottom of

the channel and the grating, and it jams. The people go

along with a broom, and they break it. They are very

frail things, and they get broken that way. If the

things were sunk down deep enough, the people would

have to put their hands down to clear the grating. As

it is, they find now that by pushing, they might in

some cases get eventually on the body of the gulley,
